Creative Uses for Orange Peels

January 25, 2010 1:00 PM

We live in a disposable world. Simple things that can have many uses (such as orange peels) are tossed without a second thought. In trying to be eco-friendly, we came up with a couple of uses for orange peels:

Orange Peel Candles This is a really cute idea for a casual party - plus, the orange peels give off a great scent!

Instructions:

Candles in Orange Peels  1. Prepare the amount of oranges you want to use. Slice off the top of the orange and scoop out the orange (the same way you would eat a grapefruit).
  2.
Fill the entire orange with wax. If you don't want it to burn for that long, you can fill it halfway with water and then wax. You can purchase wax HERE. Simply follow the directions that come with the wax to melt it down. Alternatively, you stick a candle in the orange but it won't have the same look.
  3.
Stick a wick in the wax and light the candle - Voila! You're all set! The orange peel will give off a sweet orange scent and the best thing is, you can reuse the candle holders. Just fill it up with wax again!

Cupcakes in Orange Peels We came across this idea on www.beyondagarden.blogspot.com and loved it! Here's how to make them.

Instructions:

Cupcakes in Orange Peels  1. Slice off the top of the oranges and scoop/squeeze out the orange. For an orange flavored cupcake, leave the pulp in. If you don't want it, you can scrape it out.
  2.
Fill the orange peel with a cake mix or your own recipe.
  3. Bake according to standard directions. You can either pop out the cupcakes and put them in a regular cupcake holder or leave them in.

Chocolate Orange Peels Here's a tasty and pretty idea for orange peels.

Instructions:

Orange Peels Dipped in Chocolate  1. Peel the oranges, making sure to keep the peel whole lengthwise.
  2.
Even out the edges of the peel by cutting lengthwise.
  3.
In a saucepan, melt good quality chocolate. Dip the orange pieces into the chocolate and lay on wax paper until it dries.
  4.
You can either dip the whole peel in chocolate or only half. When arranging on a plate, you can mix in some peels without chocolate for a pretty effect.

The orange peel candles are much easier if you simply place a tealight candle in each! I love the scent of oranges, and I adore candles, but if I had to go through the whole hoopla of melting & pouring wax, I'd never get these done. So the tealight, or even votives, works much better for me!

We tried it with a tealight while testing it for our blog. It didn't have the same look as our picture above.
