Father's Day

June 18, 2010 11:00 AM

Ever wondered where the word “Dad” comes from? I did, so I looked into it and found out that "Dad", which in fact comes from the Welsh word ‘Tad”, actually means father. However, the word "Father" is not the original word either. It actually started off as "Foeder" from the Old English.

Over 50 countries around the world celebrate Father’s Day in June. Some on the first Sunday of June, others on the second Sunday in June, while a large majority celebrate on the third Sunday in June.

Some interesting information on the subject:

  • In 1909, Mrs. John B. Dodd from Washington wanted to honor her father, a veteran of the Civil War and a widower. However, it was only in 1966 that then President Lyndon Johnson, signed a proclamation, declaring the 3rd Sunday in June as the official “Father’s Day”.
  • According to child development professionals, a father has the most influence on his child/children between the ages of 6-14. Lessons are taught best by example. Children tend to pick up on everything! Better practice what you preach.
  • Although research shows that 1 in 4 working dads spend under 1 hour a day with their children, it would be nice to show some appreciation to them at least one day a year.

Some of the most popular Father’s Day gifts:

  • The father of all Father’s Day gifts neckties. Once you’re at it, you might as well throw a shirt into the package as well.fathers-day
  • Dads and toolboxes go hand-in-hand. Send your guy –with a gift certificate- into a hardware store, and you just sent him to heaven!
  • Other gift ideas high up on the list are fishing rods, golf clubs, or any other sporting equipment. (Great solution if you’re trying to get him to lose some weight)
  • Although cooking is associated with women, when it comes to food and wine, men steal the show. If your man is the food and wine type, buy him any kitchen gadget, wine glasses or bar tools and you’ll have him sold!
  • Barbeques! How can we possibly forget this one! How many men do you know who would refuse a steak? What better time than father’s day, smack in the middle of barbeque season!

Happy Father’s Day!
