Homemade Pizza
2 slices of pizza + a can of coke =approximately -$4.00 + 400 calories! $4.00 x 7 days/week = $28.00/week. 400 calories x 7 days/wk = 2,800 extra calories/wk. For the average man, 2 slices doesn’t do the trick, so we are talking about the minimum here. That being said, pizza still ranks as one of America’s most favorite food. No one is asking you to cut it out of your diet, but in these trying times, why not save on some money and calories? This pizza recipe is sure to be a real hit. Let’s keep the whole wheat ingredient a secret. Unless you spill the beans, they’ll never know.
Ingredients:
1 packet active dry yeast
1 tablespoon sugar
2 ½ cups warm water- 110°F
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon salt
½ cup whole wheat flour
5 ½ cups unbleached flour
Directions:
1. Dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water using a large bowl. Let the yeast mixture sit for approximately 10 minutes- until it becomes creamy.
2. Add the olive oil, whole wheat flour, salt and 4 cups of flour into the yeast mixture.
3. Mix in the remaining cup and a half of flour, half a cup at a time, stirring well after each addition.
4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and continue kneading for another 8 minutes or until the dough is smooth.
5. Lightly oil a large mixing bowl and place the dough in the bowl. The oil will make the dough slip out easily after it is done rising.
6. Cover the dough using a slightly wet cloth and place the bowl in a warm place for 1 hour - until the dough rises to double its size.
7. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and punch it down just a bit before dividing the dough into three equal pieces and forming each piece into a ball.
8. Cover the balls with a cloth and let them rest for approximately 10 minutes.
9. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
10. Roll out the dough into any desired shape- be it round, square or triangular; cover it with pizza sauce, shredded cheese and the topping(s) of your choice i.e.: onions, mushrooms, peppers etc.
11. Bake at 425°F for 20 minutes or until the crust and cheese are a golden brown.
The recipe yields three hearty pizza crusts and can also be used to make calzones. The dough freezes well for later use. Simply defrost the dough at room temperature and your good to go.
