October 4, 2011 11:00 AM

Catering any event is quite stressful to say the least. Anybody who has ever cooked for over 50 people will attest to the fact that standing on your feet for a full day in a hot kitchen can make people quite testy. What does it take to become a successful wedding caterer?

How to Become a Successful Wedding CatererA wedding caterer ought to be an expert in cooking, baking, planning, organizing, managing and handling potential customers and customers alike. The problem is that every good caterer possesses the above. You have to make sure that you, your dishes and prices stand out above the others. Otherwise, why would anybody decide to go with you over your competitor?

1)      Being an awesome cook at home, does not guarantee that you’ll be an awesome cook when it comes to cooking for hundreds at a wedding. Most recipes don’t come out the same when doubled.

2)      Go for the proper schooling before you start. In addition to gaining the proper skills that will only be there to help you, you want to be able to make your resume look as impressive as possible. Once you take the leap into the big leagues, you don’t get much room for mistakes so you want to make sure you’re ready for it before you dive in.

3)      Once you feel you have all that it takes to take the step to becoming a wedding caterer, it’s time for you to find a professional kitchen big enough to handle it all. Not every reception hall comes along with a kitchen. This also means getting the proper equipment for transporting your food from your kitchen to the reception hall.

4)      No such thing as a cook without tools. Get equipped with all the necessary professional kitchen tools that you will need to keep your cooking on schedule and running smoothly. In addition to the kitchen tools, you will have to arrange to have dishes, cutlery, tablecloths etc., available for your customers.

5)      Next, you will need to hire waiters and waitresses for serving, and if necessary, additional kitchen staff to help you out in the kitchen.

6)      Once you’re all set up, you want to get your name out there. Advertise in wedding magazines, and hand out business cards to businesses that will come in contact with brides-to-be. If you want to reach for the stars, create a state of the art website that will give brides-to-be reason to contact you as a professional wedding caterer.

7)      Remember, that when it comes to catering a wedding, time is of essence. You have to be prepared to sit down with each bride and groom-to-be and give them as much time as they need to create their dream wedding. Tastings and variety are a must.

8)      Remember, this is a once in a lifetime experience, something girls think about since the day they’re born. Make it a day that will be hard to forget and you are guaranteed a financial future in the wedding catering business.
