A fresh, hot, soft pretzel, straight out of the oven…yummmmm. Well, how about making it a staple in your very own home? They are actually not all that hard to make, awfully easy to enjoy, and are healthy too! So easy, the kids can even help!
You’ll need:
1 Tbsp dry yeast
1 ½ cups warm water
1 Tbsp honey
1 teaspoon salt
3 Tbsp light olive or canola oil
3 ½ cups whole wheat flour
½ cup wheat germ
- In the mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in water and honey. Rest until water starts frothing...
- Stir in salt, oil, and 2 cups flour. Mix until smooth.
- Add wheat germ and remaining flour. Knead for another 5-7 minutes or until dough is smooth.
- Place a towel over mixing bowl and let rise 45 minutes to 1 hour or until dough doubled.
- Remove dough from bowl onto flat, clean surface.
- Punch down dough and cut into 16 equal parts.
- Roll each piece into 16” long ropes and shape into pretzel twists.
- Transfer pretzels to greased baking sheet and let rise 20 minutes.
