    Winco 14 inch honing steel

    An excellent honing steel. I've been looking for a larger honing steel that can accomodate chef knives up to 12" and this is perfect! It has some very minor dents and dings in the surface, but as far as I can tell, they don't impact functionality. I bought this to use, not to look at, and it works great.

    Functionality: 5/5
    +solid construction

    +metal loop at the end to hang it

    +long enough to hone blades up to 12"

    +comfortable grip

    Fit and Finnish: 4/5
    -minor dents in honing surface. These do not seem to impact the functionality of the steel.

    Value: 5/5
    +The material is not specified, but based on my tests, it appears to be a type of hardened steel

    Keep in mind a honing steel is used to straighten the blade, not sharpen it.

    Also, I recommend against using this style of honing rods on high-end knives made of steel harder than 60 rockwell (such as japanese VG10) as they are more prone to chipping. For those, you should look at smooth honing rods, typically refered to as 'butcher steel'.
